Mary Ellen Thompson
A Michigan native, Mary Ellen Thompson raised seven children while operating personal care homes in Illinois and Michigan, opening Paducah’s Thompson Laundry in 1954, and jointly owning nursing homes in Western Kentucky. With a desire to put all of her efforts into her own community, she purchased the property at 3100 Clay Street and oversaw the construction of Superior Care Home.
She put considerable thought into the name of the community she founded, wanting it to be a reflection of exceptional care. When she opened the doors of Superior Care Home in 1972, she set a new standard of excellence in care.
Later, after becoming a Superior Care Home resident herself, Ms. Thompson continued to guide, direct and influence. She carried a notebook with tips and observations that she shared with staff to improve care. It was her residency that resulted in transforming the typical nursing home experience into a warm, home-like atmosphere – years ahead of others around the country.
Now under third-generation family leadership, Superior Care Home remains a vital part of the western Kentucky region, with a culture of excellence and personalized service that will continue for generations to come.
